It’s Really Very Simple

One must have a purpose; it’s not enough to move aimlessly through life.

Don’t be unfulfilled and let life just happen to you.

Don’t grumble about your load, do something about it.

You only get one shot at this beautiful experience, so make it count.

It’s elementary:

  1. The first step is knowing what you want.

2. Then get it down on paper, on audio, on video, in a painting or all of the above.

3. Share it with people, be it your family, close friends, or even your social network.

4. Next, let go of how it will happen. Believe.

It’s easier than it sounds and doesn’t need to be overly complicated. I love this quote from one of my favourite comedians that summarises it nicely:

“As far as I can tell, it’s just about letting the universe know what you want and then working toward it while letting go of how it comes to pass.” Jim Carey

I like to write a letter to myself from 5 years in the future, explaining where I am? what I do? what do I have? how I live my life? I go to some detail and include my close family and what they are doing. They contribute to creating this vision, and we have fun imagining what it will be like, visualising together and agreeing on the words to describe it.

We print this out, and I read it to myself regularly, almost daily. I share it with close friends and family, not for debate or discussion, but it acts as an unspoken commitment, a contract almost.

We as a family talk about it over days, months and years; we marvel at how things come to pass that remarkably align with it. We sometimes tweak or modify the vision if our minds are altered or changed, but I find this is a rare occasion.

Goals are an excellent guide in life when navigating in the moment decisions or recognising opportunity when it knocks.

I also enjoy this poignant quote from 365 Tao Daily Meditations:

“There is only one universal goal: a gracious death with no regrets.” Deng Ming-Dao

Take control of your life, say what you want and live a life with no regrets.
